Oklahoma football: Sooners receive All-Big 12 recognition

The Big 12 Conference released its First and Second Team All-Big 12 selections along with all other awards given to Big 12 football players at the end of conference play. Oklahoma football has multiple players who were commended for their hard work this season.

This year we see many familiar faces on both first and second teams along with multiple other awards given to various Oklahoma football players.

Award-Winning Sooners

Three Oklahoma players were named to the All-Big 12 first team. Those three players who carrier on the Sooner legacy are Creed Humphery, Gabe Brkic and Jeremiah Hall.

All three players named to the Big 12 First Team have had stellar seasons in their own respective positions. Redshirt junior offensive lineman and team captain, Humphery is seen as a leader for the Sooners. Humphrey plays center at OU and is notorious for his leadership on the O-line. I don’t think it is a surprise to most people that Humphery made the list for the Big 12 First Team.

Along with Humphery, Brkic also had a really good season. The Oklahoma kicker made an impressive 16 out of 21 field goal attempts this year making his furthest field goal from 55 yards out. Brkic was also announced to be a finalist for the Lou Groza kicker award earlier this season.

Finally, along sides Humphery and Brkic, redshirt junior Jeremiah Hall has also been named to the All Big-12 first team. Hall currently has 206 receiving yards across 17 catches for the season as well as five touchdown for the year totaling 30 points for the Sooners this season.

As for the All Big-12 Second Team, we see many familiar Sooner faces making the roster as well on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball. One of those players being offensive freshman of the year, Marvin Mims.

Mims had a stellar rookie season including breaking Ceedee Lamb’s freshmen TD record in the Big-12 Championship Game, making the new record eight touchdowns.

Alongside Mims on the All Big-12 Second Team are offensive lineman Adrian Ealy, three defensive linemen Ronnie Perkins, Isaiah Thomas and Perrion Winfrey.

Ealy is a 6-foot-6 redshirt junior who was also awarded the honor of second team last year. Ealy is a part of the well known and well praised Sooner O-line who has been known to be one of the best in the country.

As for the defensive linemen, Perkins was a big name and impact player for the Sooners this season, even after his half season suspension. Perkins did not start his season until midway through, returning for the Texas Tech game.  Without having yet finished the season, the junior is putting up some impressive numbers for OU totaling 14 solo tackles, seven assists and five and a half sacks.

Junior Isaiah Thomas also had a very impressive year on the defensive line. Thomas currently has an impressive twenty solo tackles, and 11 assists for the season, along with eight sacks to his name for the 2020 season thus far.

Finally, junior Perrion Winfery was also named to the All Big-12 Second Team. Winfery was named the No. 1 recruit out of junior college last year by 247Sports and so far this year has totaled eight solo tackles, seven assists and half a sack for Oklahoma his rookie year as a Sooner.

Along with these eight players named to both the first and second team, an abundance of Oklahoma Sooners were named to the Honorable mentions list for the 2020 season: Brian Asamoah (LB), Nik Bonitto (LB), Gabe Brkic (STPoY), D.J. Graham (DFoY), Marquis Hayes (OL), Marvin Mims (OFoY, KR/PR), Tre Norwood (DB), Spencer Rattler (OFoY, QB), Rhamondre Stevenson (RB), Austin Stogner (TE), Isaiah Thomas (DLoY), Delarrin Turner-Yell (DB), Woddi Washington (DFoY), Theo Wease (WR), Perrion Winfrey (DNoY) and Dashaun White (LB).

After Oklahoma football, it clinched the Big-12 Championship title for the sixth time in the last six years against Iowa State, the number six must be a lucky number for the Sooners as they finished sixth in the College Football Playoff rankings and will now take on the Florida Gators in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 30 for their final game of the season.
