After a six-game suspension due to failing a drug test, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, returned to the field for the first time this season. The wait was long anticipated by not only Stevenson but the whole Oklahoma football program as well due to the key role Stevenson plays in the Sooner offense.
Returning to the field, Stevenson made a major statement scoring three touchdowns revealing an “I’m Back” shirt under his jersey after scoring his third and final touchdown. Stevenson racked up 87 yards over 13 carries.
Stevenson’s fiery and eager return also awarded him the Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week after his three touchdowns made him the first Sooner to score three on the ground in one game since 2018.
Attributing over one-third of Oklahoma’s 213 rushing yards for the game, Stevenson’s return was a statement made by the Oklahoma football offense that not only is Stevenson back but the Sooners are back on top of their game as well.
Following the 62-28 slaughtering of Texas Tech, head coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Spencer Rattler expressed their excitement about Stevenson alongside Ronnie Perkins‘ return to the field.
“They had a big impact. They are two really really good football players and it was great to have them back,” Riley stated.
Following Riley, during his postgame press conference, Rattler was very eager to talk about Stevenson’s return.
“We were extremely excited. We all got chills. Super happy for them and we knew they would come back and do us justice. They both did a great job. Rhamondre had three touchdowns that were big for us. Just a great back for us,” Rattler said.
Stevenson’s return in Week 6 was huge for the Sooners after they seem to finally be holding down the fort in Norman. Now sitting at 4-2, the Sooners are finally back in the AP Top 25 Poll sitting at 19.
Coming off of an electric win, the Sooners will take on Kansas in the Palace on the Prarie this weekend.
