Oklahoma football: Will Spencer Rattler win the Heisman?

Redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler is already making waves for Oklahoma football after his first start against Missouri State this past weekend. It was pretty apparent to Sooner fans and college football fans alike that the five-star recruit was going to stir the pot among the top quarterbacks in the nation forcing his way into the conversation. However, Rattler’s performance this past weekend exceeded the expectations of most.

After a total of 290 yards and 14 pass completions in just a single half, Rattler seems to have gone from being the ‘up and coming’ to pushing his way into the Heisman conversation.

Prior to his performance at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Rattler was deemed the preseason Heisman winner on a poll conducted on FOX’s college football Twitter page. The best part about this award? College football fans themselves are the ones who vote, giving Rattler the stamp of approval from not only his Sooners but from college football fans all over the nation.

Rattler’s performance on the field did certainly look to be similar to his former Heisman predecessors, and even dare I say, maybe better. Calm, cool and collected QB1 looked like a seasoned pro rather than a rookie from the moment the first play was called this past Saturday.

Rattler and his particularly young offense is one that looks incredibly promising this coming season. With both his running and passing game on lock in just the first game, the Heisman winner this year may not be as unanimous as it was being predicted to be just one month ago.

Now, it can be easy to say that Rattler’s stellar performance was due to playing a mediocre team but, a 48-0 win for the Sooners with 41 of those points being attributed to Rattler in some way, I say there are some big things coming for Rattler and the Sooners this season.

Rattler’s reputation, first game performance, and preseason award are also all being reflected in Las Vegas, which has his odds of winning the Heisman at 9-1 with Heisman frontrunner Trevor Lawerance as the only other contender ahead of him.

It is important to note that Rattler was definitely in the Heisman conversation before even stepping foot onto the field but with unexpected freshmen studs Marvin Mims and Seth Mcgowan beside, there’s a good chance that Heisman Park at the University of Oklahoma may have to start plotting a spot for his Heisman statue.
