Meet Texas football writer Jesus Mata

Hello Longhorn Fans, my name is Jesus Mata. I was born in El Paso, Texas but now live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. I’m a senior at the University of New Mexico. My major is journalism and my minor in professional writing. You may know me from the articles I’ve written for Deceptive Speed, about Duke football so far this season. I will now be writing about Texas football starting next week.

About Me

Like a lot of kids growing up in Texas, football is something that has always been a part of my life. I played football for Rio Rancho High School and was a linebacker. While I didn’t start in high school, I got a chance to have a lot of awesome experiences and make some lifetime friends.

To get the chance to write about the team I’ve been a fan of my entire life is exciting. My dreams and goals I have for my career is, to work for NFL Network. I would like to be either a commentator or have a show with co-hosts. Something like Good Morning Football, I love their show and it looks like a lot of fun.

My biggest sports influences have been Rich Eisen and Stephen A. Smith. They are what a lot of sports journalists hope to become. Their work ethic and analysis of sports is amazing, and I just hope one day, I can even be close to the level they’re at right now.

Texas Football

I’m very excited about the chance to write about a team I’ve been a fan of since I was practically born. Nearly my entire family are huge fans of the Texas Longhorns. Watching Vince Young, then Colt McCoy and now Sam Ehlinger play has been something special. They all had a lot of heart and love for the game of football.

Texas has struggled so far this season, by its standards. Now it has a bye week to fix the mistakes and try to bounce back after consecutive losses to TCU and Oklahoma. Texas will play Baylor when it resumes play this season. Every game from now until the end of the season, is going to be a must win game. Texas has to win out and also hope some of the other teams in the Big 12 conference lose, if the Longhorns hope to qualify for the Big 12 Championship this year.

I’m excited for this opportunity to write about the Longhorns and can’t wait to get started. Hopefully the Longhorns can turn this season around and qualify for at least a bowl game if they can’t make it to the Big 12 Championship.
