This first week is a big game for Oklahoma football and certain players.Yes, the Oklahoma Sooners are playing Missouri State and are predicted to win by 40-plus. However, this is a statement game for the Sooners in a way.
Offense preview
The first game of a season like this with a new quarterback, young defense and a shortened running back depth chart, all eyes will be on Spencer Rattler and seeing what he can really do through four quarters. That is, unless he even needs to stay in that long.
As a dual threat quarterback, Rattler knows the expectations and pressure and considers it a privilege. Watch out for other players like wide receivers Theo Wease and Charleston Rambo on the outside as big targets for Rattler. Austin Stogner at tight end will also be another threat.
Defense preview
Nik Bonitto at linebacker and senior LaRon Stokes at defensive tackle should be two players who impact the Sooners’ defense from the jump. Tre Brown is also the veteran cornerback who has made incredible plays for the Sooners’ defense and will easily be their best cornerback.
The last two players would be strong safety Delarrian Turner-Yell, who had 60 solo tackles last season, will be another key for this Sooners’ defense. Then, there is the junior college transfer Perrion Winfrey at nose guard. This new addition to the defensive front line was a huge pick up for OU in the offseason.
There is no doubt this Saturday all eyes will be on Lincoln Riley and Rattler. The Sooners need to make this game a statement that they have not gone anywhere.
