Jones is rated as a 3-star prospect by On3, Rivals and ESPN, while 247Sports gave him a 2-star rating. In addition to FIU, he had reported FBS scholarship offers from the Kansas Jayhawks, UAB Blazers, Akron Zips and UMass Minutemen.

In addition to bringing in Jones, the Golden Panthers landed last season’s Duke Blue Devils starting quarterback Gunnar Holmberg. He is expected to be the FIU starter in Week 1 as the Golden Panthers look to replace Max Bortenschlager, who is out of eligibility.

FIU’s quarterback room also includes Haden Carlson, Grayson James and Isiah Velez. Kaylan Wiggins transferred away from the program and remains in the transfer portal.

The program will enter a new era as Mike MacIntyre will enter his first season as the FIU head coach after being the Memphis Tigers defensive coordinator the last two seasons. This will be MacIntyre’s third head coaching job after making stops with the San Jose Spartans and Colorado Buffaloes.

The Golden Panthers had a rocky coaching situation last year with head coach Butch Davis publicly criticizing the administration, and his contract expired after the season. FIU finished 1-11 overall including 0-8 in Conference USA.

Amari Jones attended Bradford High School in Starke, Florida.
