Mendoza had been committed to Yale since last August before receiving offer from the FIU Panthers, and Cal became the second team reported to have offered him. Mendoza is rated as a 3-star prospect by On3 and 247Sports, while Rivals gave him 2 stars.
The Golden Bears did not have a quarterback for the class of 2022 because 4-star QB Justyn Martin decommitted after being committed to Cal for more than eight months. In addition to landing Mendoza, Cal added former Purdue Boilermakers QB Jack Plummer through the transfer portal in this class.
Plummer is a heavy favorite to replace Chase Garbers, who started 11 games last season. Other quarterback options are Kai Millner and Zach Johnson, neither of which have taken a snap at the college level.
Cal finished 5-7 overall last season including 4-5 in Pac-12 play. Justin Wilcox was rumored for a number of available head coaching jobs, but he will head into Year 6 with the program and signed an extension through 2027 two weeks ago.
Fernando Mendoza attends Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Florida.
