Staub is rated as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports and Rivals. He made his commitment less than a week after receiving an offer from the Buffaloes with the only other reported offer coming from the Arizona Wildcats.
Colorado signed 3-star quarterback Owen McCown for the class of 2022, and the Buffaloes added former Houston Cougars quarterback Maddox Kopp through the transfer portal. Staub is Colorado’s lone QB commit early on in the 2023 recruiting cycle.
The Buffaloes are coming off a 4-8 record last season with redshirt freshman Brendon Lewis at quarterback after the previous season’s starter Sam Noyer transferred to play for the Oregon State Beavers and Tennessee Volunteers transfer JT Shrout went down with a season-ending injury during fall camp. Lewis started all 12 games and completed 58% of his passes for 1,540 yards with 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
It seems likely there will be a QB competition this offseason with Lewis, Shrout and potentially others in the mix without any quarterbacks on the roster with proven success at the college level.
Karl Dorrell has led Colorado to an 8-10 record heading into Year 3 and made some changes to the coaching staff this offseason. The Buffaloes did not have a good offense in 2021, and Dorrell brought in offensive coordinator Mike Sanford, who was fired from that position with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, to replace Darrin Chiaverini.
The Buffaloes lost talented running back Jarek Broussard and their top wide receiver target Brenden Rice to the transfer portal, so there should be plenty of competition at the skill positions for Colorado heading into the 2022 season.
Ryan Staub attends West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch, California.
